Jasprit Bumrah has surpassed Bishan Singh Bedi's record of most Test wickets by an Indian bowler in Australia in a single series on the second day of the fifth and final match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) on Saturday. Bumrah, who started the Test match with 30 wickets in the series so far, took two more to reach te milestone.
Leading the side in the absence of Rohit Sharma, Bumrah first dismissed Usman Khawaja on Day 1. On Day 2 morning, Bumrah got the better of Marnus Labuschagne to reach the milestone. In the process, the Indian fast bowler left behind legendary spinner Bedi, who had taken 31 wickets in five matches during India's tour of Australia in 1977-78.
In the second over of the day, Bumrah managed to find a thin edge off Labuschagne's bat, which flew to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. The whole Indian team appealed in unison but the on-field umpire remained unmoved. Bumrah immediately opted for a DRS.
TV replays showed there was a think edge as spike was caught on UltraEdge, forcing the umpire to reverse his decision. On the opening day, Bumrah contributed with both bat and ball.
Coming at No.10, the stand-in-captain scored a valuable 17-ball 22 before dismissing Khawaja on the final over of the day. The Australian seemed to delay the game as it was the last over of the day, annoying Bumrah.
While Bumrah was complaining to the umpires, young opener Sam Konstas engaged in a verbal battle with Bumrah. However, the Indian had the last laugh as Khawaja edged to get out caught at slips. The entire Indian team celebrated mockingly in front of Konstas.
Earlier, Bumrah consolidated his place as the world's no.1 Test bowler with 907 rating points in ICC Test Rankings. Bumrah surpassed Ravichandran Ashwin, who once had 904 rating points. Bumrah is leading the side for the second time in this Test series -- He had led in Perth after Rohit missed the game due to the birth of his second child. India won the game by 295 runs. In the fifth Test, Rohit opted out of the game, according to Bumrah.
