Multiple chilling videos from the New Orleans shooting scene show people ducking, running, and hiding as a man opened fire indiscriminately after ramming his pickup truck into New Year revellers. At least 15 people were killed, and 30 or more have sustained injuries after the truck crashing and shooting incident on Canal and Bourbon Street in New Orleans, prompting the mayor to term it a “terrorist attack”. The intention behind the New Orleans ‘terrorist’ attack has not been determined yet.

After crashing the truck into people, the attacker got out of it, fired at police and struck two police officers, leading to chaos in the area. People hid and ran as multiple shots were fired. The chaotic scenes captured several injured people lying on the street. The death toll is likely to increase as more details come.

According to NOLA Ready, the city's emergency preparedness department, the injured have been taken to at least five hospitals.

The incident occurred at 3:15 am, toward the end of New Year’s celebrations in New Orleans, and hours before the kickoff of the Sugar Bowl, a college football quarterfinal held in the city's Superdome. Thousands were expected to be in attendance.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell termed the New Orleans attack a “terrorist attack”.

The Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, said on X, “A horrific act of violence took place on Bourbon Street earlier this morning,” He urged people to stay away from the area where the attack took place.

A couple told CBS News that they heard crashing noises coming from down the street, and they then saw a white truck slam through a barricade “at a high rate of speed”. New Orleans has seen shootings and cars colliding with crowds at past parades.

World leaders condemn New Orleans ‘terror’ attack

World leaders have expressed their condemnation. Messages of condolences poured in from global leaders, including Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and others.

The leaders denounced the attack, extended sympathies to the victims and their families, and emphasised the need to combat "terrorism."
