Hours before United States President Donald Trump made his first address to Congress lawmakers, US Vice President JD Vance was caught lamenting about Trump’s lengthy speech, expected to last for 90 minutes.
In a hot mic moment, caught on camera, he greeted House Speaker Mike Johnson and told him, “I think the speech is going to be great, but I don’t know how you do this for 90 minutes.”
Johnson responded to JD Vance’s comments by slightly pushing down the microphone and saying, “The hardest thing was doing it during Biden, when his speech was a stupid campaign speech.”
Johnson was a part of the audience of former US president Joe Biden's address in 2024. His address to lawmakers was seen as a political speech ahead of US presidential polls later that year. In the speech, Biden praised his administration decisions and used the moment to project strength amid concerns from Democrats and donors about his re-election bid.
Donald Trump's address to the joint session of Congress at the House of Chamber came amid economic uncertainty. His announcement to impose trade tariffs on Mexico and Canada met with sharp criticism from the two nations.
During his speech on Tuesday night (local time), he outlined his achievements while keeping the whole address centred around the theme: “renewal of the American dream.
He also addressed his policies for fostering peace in the Middle East and Ukraine after halting all the military and financial aid to Ukraine. Additionally, he also mentioned several other subjects including executive actions, tariff plans, etc.
He also singled out ‘Islamic terrorism’ during Ramadan. “America is once again standing strong against the forces of radical Islamic terrorism,” Trump said in reference to a 2021 attack in Afghanistan that killed more than a dozen American servicemembers and around 170 Afghan civilians.
