US President Donald Trump on Friday met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House ahead of signing a deal that will give the United States access to rare earth minerals as part of an overall plan to help Ukraine recover after a truce in the war with Russia.
During the meeting at Oval office, Trump told his Ukrainian counterpart that a truce with Russia is "fairly close" and that the deal allowing US exploitation of Ukraine's natural resources would be "very fair."
Trump also told Zelenskyy that he either "make a deal" with Russia "or we're out."
The meeting comes a week after Donald Trump branded Volodymyr Zelenskyy a dictator before making a U-turn saying, "Did I say that? I can't believe I said that."
Upon his arrival at White House, Zelenskyy flashed a thumbs-up but didn't speak to reporters as he arrived at the White House, reported AP.
He wore a more formal black top rather than his usual military green T-shirt, prompting Trump to quip, “He's all dressed up.”
During their Oval Office meeting, Trump told Zelenskyy that Ukrainian soldiers have been unbelievably brave and talked up an economic agreement between the two countries, reported AP.
Stating that "we have something that is a very fair deal,” Trump said, “It is a big commitment from the United States.”
Trump stated that the US wants to see the killing in the war stopped. "US money for Ukraine should be ‘put to different kinds of use like rebuilding,’ said Trump.
Trump berated Zelensky as they sat in the Oval Office, telling him to be more "thankful" and saying, "You're in no position to dictate what we're going to feel."
And he further told the Ukrainian president that he either "make a deal" with Russia "or we're out."
Zelenskyy talked up the prospect of liquid natural gas exports to Europe, but gently disagreed when Trump repeated his claim that Europe “did much less” than the United States to support Ukraine against Russia.
Zelenskyy called Putin a killer and a terrorist and told Trump there should be “no compromises with a killer”.
