Chennai Rains LIVE: Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday alleged that the opposition leaders of AIADMK wanted to politicise the flood issue and emphasised that the government is prepared to tackle any amount of rainfall. "Whatever be the amount of rainfall, the government is prepared to tackle it," M K Stalin said after inspecting the ongoing flood relief and mitigation measures in his Kolathur Assembly constituency, reported PTI.

Chennai Rains LIVE: AIADMK, Tamil Nadu's main opposition, on Thursday, attacked the DMK government over flood mitigation initiatives. Earlier, the state government set up the Thiruppugazh Committee to suggest measures to prevent and mitigate floods.

Seeking white paper on the committee's recommendations, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami demanded government action over the flood issue. In response, Deputy CM Udhayanidhi said the "government clearing waterlogging constituted whitepaper."

Chennai Rains LIVE: The Regional Meteorological Centre in its latest press release said, "The Depression over westecentral and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal moved west- northwestwards with a speed of 14 kmph during past 6 hours and crossed north Tamil Nadu - South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to north of Chennai, near latitude 13.5°N and longitude 80.2°E around 0430 hrs IST of today, the 17th October 2024. 

The weather bulletin dated October 17 noted the possibility of the depression weakening into a low pressure area during next 12 hours.

Chennai Rains Live: The IMD said on Wednesday evening that the “depression” over southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 17 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centered at 5:30 pm of today, October 16 over the same region near latitude 12.9° N and longitude 81.9° E, about 190 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu), 250 km east-northeast of Puducherry. 

“[the depression will] move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu - South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to north of Chennai during early morning of 17th October,” the IMD said

Chennai Rains Live: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday sounded an "orange alert" in two districts in Kerala, predicting very heavy rainfall in isolated places there. While northern Malappuram and Kannur were placed under an orange alert, 10 other districts, including Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kasaragod, were given a yellow alert predicting heavy rainfall, according to the IMD.

Chennai Rains Live: Balachandran, Director of Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre said, "Yesterday’s Depression over southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards and lay centered at 0830 IST of today, over the same region, about 320 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu), 350 km east-northeast of Puducherry and 400 km southeast of Nellore (Andhra Pradesh). It is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu - South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to Chennai during early morning of 17th October."

Chennai Rains Live: "Since yesterday night, the rain has stopped. Overnight, we have drained water out from the majority part of the city. Right now, there is water stagnation in some locations... Water is draining out slowly," said Chennai Mayor R Priya.

Chennai Rains Live: The IMD said, "The depression over southwest and adjoining westecentral Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 15 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centered at 1130 hours IST of today, the 16th October 2024 over the same region near latitude 12.5° N and longitude 82.7° E, about 280 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu), 320 km east-northeast of Puducherry and 370 km southeast of Nellore (Andhra Pradesh)."

"It is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu - South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to Chennai during early morning of 17th October," the IMD added.

Chennai Rains Live: In response to the anticipated Cyclone alert for October 15th, 16th and 17th in Chennai by Indian Meteorological Department, Chennai Metro Rail Services will be operated with increased frequency of services to support Chennai public at times of heavy rain.

First train departs at 05:00 hrs from all terminal and last train depaarts at 23:00 hrs from all terminals. While between 08:00hrs to 11:00hrs and 17:00hrs to 20:00hrs, Metro Trains will be available on Green Line: (Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G.Ramachandran Central Metro to St. Thomas Mount Metro in every 5 minutes

While on Blue Line, metro will run from Airport to Wimco Nagar Depot in every 6 minutes.

 Chennai Rains Live: At the medical camp organised by the state BJP, former Telangana Governor and BJP leader Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan said, “The government is saying that they have arranged a lot of medical camps. But, it should reach more people.” 

“You can see here people are in need and people want us to give them medicines. Now, not only we have extended it but we are checking the BP and sugar. Not only this, we are also giving some bread for the children. But the government is saying that the Dy CM and the CM are visiting all the places. It's the duty of the government to look after the people...” she added.

Chennai Rains Live: Heavy rain continued to lash Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, bringing residential neighborhoods and roads under knee-deep water and leading to traffic congestion besides affecting public transport services.

Visuals from the city show incessant rainfall leading to waterlogging in several parts of the city, including the Madley Subway and the Mambalam area.

As parts of the state reel under the heavy downpours, efforts to pump out the water are underway in the city including the Choolaimedu area.

Chennai Rains Live: Several cars are parked on a bridge in Chennai to avoid damage caused by waterlogging as parts of the city continue to receive intermittent rainfall.

Tamil Nadu Chennai Rains LIVE: A depression in the southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm which is moving in a northwest direction at a speed of 10 km/h. 

It is located 440 km from Chennai, 460 km from Puducherry, and 530 km from Nellore. The storm is expected to make landfall near the coast between Puducherry and Nellore by tomorrow morning. 

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in several places in the South Coast and Rayalaseema, with extremely heavy rainfall likely in some areas. Along the coast, wind speeds of 40-60 km/h are expected.
