Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh resigned from his post on Sunday nearly two years after the violence started in the state, sparking criticism from Congress who blamed PM Narendra Modi for "allowing him to continue", and urged the PM to visit the state and hear the "stories of horror from the people."
Earlier this week, a new controversy erupted after the Supreme Court sought a sealed-cover forensic report on the authenticity of leaked audio clips alleging the role of Singh in the ethnic violence.
The tapes reportedly included conversations where Singh allegedly suggested that Meitei groups were allowed to loot arms and ammunition from the state government during the unrest, which has so far claimed 250 lives.
A source told news agency PTI that Singh was losing support among BJP MLAs, many of whom met party leaders in Delhi to convey their unhappiness with his continuation. However, BJP Manipur chief A Sharda Devi said Biren "resigned keeping in mind the future of the state." She said there were no differences among the BJP legislators.
The Opposition had been demanding Biren's resignation for allegedly failing to curb the ongoing ethnic violence in the state. The issue of the violence in Manipur also triggered a ruckus in Parliament in 2023 and 2024. Biren resigned days after Manipur Congress president Keisham Meghachandra said the party would move a no-confidence motion against the N Biren Singh government in the state assembly

They have ruined the social equation of Manipur, A rift has been created between the two communities forever. This govt should not be there for such a long time. Removing the CM after everything was ruined does not make any sense," Udit Raj said.

Now that the CM has belatedly resigned, we hope and urge him to visit Manipur and hear the stories of horror from the people. Congress party's no-confidence motion, mounting public pressure, and the Supreme Court investigation has resulted in the discredited CM's resignation. Thank goodness that this time it's not a 2023-like-resignation-drama, and better sense has prevailed!" Kharge said.
