8th Pay Commission: PM Modi says Cabinet nod will improve quality of life, ‘proud of govt employees’

8th Pay Commission news: Prime Minister Narendra Modi saif on Thursday that the decision to set-up the 8th Pay Commission will largely improve the lives of the Central government employees. PM Modi also said he was proud of the Central government employees who work to build a Viksit Bharat.

“We are all proud of the efforts of all Government employees, who work to build a Viksit Bharat. The Cabinet's decision on the 8th Pay Commission will improve quality of life and give a boost to consumption,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

The Union Cabinet on Thursday, January 16, approved setting up the 8th Pay Commission to revise salaries of nearly 50 lakh Central government employees and allowances of 65 lakh pensioners. Dearness Allowance (DA) is also likely to be affected with the setting up of the 8th Pay Commission.

8th Pay Commission news: All we know about it

1. I&B Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a briefing that two chairman and two members of the Commission will be appointed soon.

2. The 8th Pay Commission shall come into force January 1, 2026, according to the reports.

3. After the 8th Pay Commission is set-up, it will hold consultations with Central and state governments and other stakeholders before giving recommendations to the government.

4. The term of the 7th Pay Commission will end in 2026. Since 1947, seven Pay Commissions have been constituted, with the last one implemented in 2016.

5. The 7th Pay Commission was constituted in 2014 and its recommendations were implemented on January 1, 2016.

Who benefits from 8th Pay Commission?

With the 8th Pay Commission's implementation and subsequent pay scale hikes, around 50 lakh Central government employees, which also includes the defence personnel, will benefit from it.

Not just the Central government employees, about 65 lakh pensioners, too, will also see an uptick in their pensions and other allowances.
