Wall Street today: US stocks mixed, Fed minutes & Jackson Hole in focus

At 09:51 a.m. the Dow Jones fell 0.11 per cent, the S&P 500 gained 0.10 per cent, the Nasdaq gained 0.09 per cent

US stocks were mixed on Tuesday, ahead of the release of minutes of the Federal Reserve's last policy meeting and the Jackson Hole symposium later this week.

From the two events, investors would try to seek clues on September monetary policy meeting.

At 09:51 a.m. the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 46.91 points, or 0.11 per cent, to 40,849.62, the S&P 500 gained 5.71 points, or 0.10 per cent, to 5,613.96 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 15.43 points, or 0.09 per cent, to 17,892.20.

At the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 22.0 points, or 0.05 per cent, to 40,874.52. The S&P 500 fell 5.4 points, or 0.10 per cent, to 5,602.88, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 27.7 points, or 0.15 per cent, to 17,849.087.

Minutes from the Fed's last policy meeting are due on Wednesday.

Chip giant Nvidia stock slipped 2.7 per cent.

Palo Alto Networks jumped 6.4 per cent after the cybersecurity company reported stronger profit and revenue for the latest quarter.

Eli Lilly rose 4 per cent after the drugmaker said its weight-loss drug cut the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 94 per cent in pre-diabetic adults.

Tesla stock rose 1.1 per cent after the automaker was set to get a reduced tariff on its China-built cars exported to the European Union.

Boeing stock fell 2.5 per cent after the plane maker stopped test flights of its 777-9 models as it awaits certification after a component between engine and airplane structure failed to perform during a maintenance check.

In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 3.83 per cent from 3.87 per cent late on Monday.

Crude oil

Oil prices dipped on Tuesday on Middle East tensions and China demand concerns.

Brent crude edged 2 cents lower, or 0.03 per cent, at $77.64 per barrel as of 1236 GMT. Front month US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures inched 4 cents lower, or 0.05 per cent, to $74.33.

Bullion

Gold prices extended their record run on Tuesday on a weaker US dollar.

Spot gold rose 1.1 per cent to $2,530.40 per ounce by 9:59 am ET [1359 GMT]. US gold futures gained about 1.1 per cent to $2,569.00.

Spot silver rose 1.2 per cent to $29.84 per ounce.
