MCD Poll Results: AAP wrests power from BJP, wins 134 wards of 250 wards

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Wednesday alleged that the BJP was trying to poach newly-elected AAP councillors and asserted that none of them will fall prey to their "game".

He said the newly elected councillors have been instructed to record "such phone calls" in case they receive one, news agency PTI reported. 

According to news agency PTI, the Aam Aadmi Party swept the elections to the 250-ward Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday, its candidates recorded the biggest and the narrowest victory margins in the polls.

AAP's Aaley Mohammed Iqbal won from Chandni Mahal with the biggest margin of 17,134 votes and Ashu Thakur bagged Chittaranjan Park seat by a wafer-thin margin of 44 votes.

While Iqbal defeated Congress' Mohd Hamid, Thakur was pitted against BJP's Kanchan Choudhary.

Over 780 candidates who were in the fray in the civic polls in Delhi lost their deposit with the results being announced on Wednesday, according to data shared by the State Election Commission.

A total of 1,349 candidates tested their fortunes in the high-stakes polls held on December 4.

In a statement on Wednesday, the SEC shared data related to the counting exercise, according to which 784 candidates lost their security deposit.

The BJP swept three of the four wards in the Patparganj Assembly segment and all three in the Shakur Basti constituency held by senior AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain -- both targets of sustained attacks over corruption by the saffron party -- in the MCD elections.

Exit polls missed the mark on few counts with the AAP belying their predictions and failing to cross the 150-mark, while the BJP winning more than 100 seats in the MCD poll results declared on Wednesday. (PTI)

An elated AAP after winning the Delhi civic body polls today vowed to improve civic amenities in the capital while the BJP thanked voters for "recognising" its work as it took solace in securing over a hundred seats despite exit poll predicting its rout.

On AAP's win in the Delhi MCD elections, former cricketer and AAP MP Harbhajan Singh said, "It is a big victory. This was a big task to achieve. I extend congratulations to all including Kejriwal ji."

Three ex-women mayors of the national capital who fought on BJP tickets emerged victorious in the civic polls today, while an ex-mayor of North Delhi lost the contest in Civil Lines ward.

Delhi people have swept away the garbage with a jhaadu (broom, which is the symbol of AAP), tweeted AAP with a video after deseating the BJP in the MCD polls.

The Aam Aadmi Party has won in 134 wards, the BJP in 104, and the Congress in nine. Independents have won in three.
