Agartala: The government has decided to do away with the no-detention policy for students from the next academic session, Union minister Mahendra Nath Pandey said on Thursday.

He said the decision was taken following representation from most of the states as they said the quality of education has deteriorated because of the policy.

Under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, no child admitted in a school will be held back in any class or expelled till the completion of elementary education covering Class 1-8.

“There has been a unanimous decision of withdrawing the no-detention policy from the Right to Education Act 2009,” the Union minister of state for HRD said in Agartala. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to transform 20 universities of the country into world class ones and the ministry was working in this direction.

To a question, Pandey, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, said construction of Ram Mandir at Ayodhya would be done within the framework of the law.
